One last Christmas card before the end of 2012!

Here is my last Christmas card for 2012 which is the one I made for Keith, my other half.

The Poinsettia is on the front cover and the other images are on the inside surfaces of  a concertina card. (The greeting is on the back of the card).

All are images taken from Sheena Douglass stamps and they have been painted with Pebeo Fantasy Moon and Fantasy Prisme paints once the relief edges had set.

The labels were also from Sheena's stamps which were stamped onto white pearlescent card and then heat embossed in gold.

The various shaped black layers behind the images were cut out with Spellbinders dies using my e-bosser machine.

The double sided pearlescent card used for the card base was embossed using the e-bosser machine in an A4 size embossing folder. The finished card is A5 in size.

Coming Soon - A New Monthly Crafting Challenge

Good afternoon.

It is nearly the end of 2012 and will soon be the start of a New Year. To celebrate this fact, I am starting a new  Crafting Challenge. It will be a monthly challenge for now but I want to make it fortnightly in the future. I hope that you will like the fact that it will be open to any type of craft as long as it fits the challenge theme. I do not want to limit it to one craft as there are so many out there which need an outlet for the world to appreciate.

With any luck, the first challenge will be announced on 1st January...... as long as I can work out the technical bits! Do please watch this space for more information.

More Decorated Tiles

I think I am getting the hang of this!

Here are 4 tiles all of which have been painted with Pebeo Fantasy Moon and Fantasy Prisme paints.

All the images are from stamps by Sheena Douglass.

I am looking into how to best mount these to make teapot or saucepan stands.

Good morning,

Just a quick reminder that Giveaway III ends tomorrow. Don't forget to enter at: Giveaway III

Decorated Tile

Here I am playing with Pebeo Fantasy Moon and Fantasy Prisme paints again.

This is based on a white ceramic tile. The central image is from a rubber tag stamp by the lovely Sheena Douglass. Once I had edged the stamped image in a gold coloured relief medium, I extended the design so that the whole tile surface was incorporated into the design.

The land, the tree and the tag edge are painted with the Prisme paint and the sky with the Moon paint. I love the way that the two colours of Moon paint mixed themselves to give the beautiful effect for the sky.

This will be made into a pot stand by putting felt and rubber feet on the back.

Pebeo Painted Book Marks

I really have fallen in love with these wonderful paints. These tags, made from thick mount board, have been painted both with the Fantasy Moon and the Fantasy Prisme paints. Again, I have done a close up so that you can begin to see the sorts of effects that you get.

The image is from a stamp by Sheena Douglass from her latest sets designed to go with these paints. However, I am looking forward to using other stamped images too and even having a go free hand. So brave, so fearless!

Just wait until you see what they look like on ceramic tiles! Once the paint has dried for about a week, it is so tough that you can use it as a trivet for hot pans with no ill effects to either tile or pan.
I need to go raiding Ikea over the holidays to see what I can find to decorate. As the paints work on all non absorbent surfaces they will be so many things to have a go at.

Playing with Pebeo Fantasy Paints

Happy Saturday to you all.

I have been having great fun playing with my new Pebeo Fantasy paints. They give such brilliant effects. OK, I admit they are not perfect but as these are my first attempts I am pretty pleased with them.

The Fantasy Prisme paints split as they dry, as can be seen in the bottom close up picture, leading to all sorts of different effects. The amount of patterning apparently depends on how thick the layer of paint is. The more paint, the more it splits.

The Fantasy Moon paints don't split like the Prime but gives some lovely swirly patterns.
These three examples are done on thick cardboard so I can't wait to try them out on other substrates such as glass, tiles, mirrors etc.

The stamp used for the pattern is one of the new ones from Sheena Douglass. This is then outlined with a relief medium which does not spread to give a rim around each shape. Then you just drop the paint into each section carefully trying not to get it in the wrong sections!

They are oil based paints so it does take quite a time to dry but the results are worth it.

Anything but a Card

Well the challenge was for anything other than a card so here is one of my encaustic art paintings.

The sky was created on a hot plate to give the interesting effect. The main part of the picture was done with the iron whilst the fence, birds and dragonflies were created with the stylus.

This was one of the pictures that I had in my recent exhibition in Stroud.

I am putting this in to the following challenge:
Tuesday Alchemy - Anything but a Card

Christmas Card 1

Well, I thought it was time to start my Christmas cards and so for a change I thought I would go with a black and white theme.

The A5 size backing card  is made of beautiful double sided white pearlescent card which was run through my Ebosser to give the gorgeous embossed finish.

The image is from a stamp by Chocolate Baroque. It was one of their Christmas stamps from a few years ago but I have always liked it. This was simply embossed using black ink and very fine detail clear embossing powder.

The image and the mat were cut out with Spellbinder dies using the Ebosser again. I do like this new machine, it is so much easier than using a hand turned one when you have so many cards to make.

The effect was finished off with a black ribbon and bow on the spine.

This has been entered in the following challenge: Crafty Creations: Christmas is coming.

Wow

I am so thrilled. My Blog has just passed the 10,000 page views mark. I will have to think of some way of celebrating! Thank you to everyone who has helped with this. I do hope you will continue to visit to see what we are up to.

Upon Reflection

Good afternoon.

It's not often the I put up a challenge card in the middle of the week but I have the rest of the week off work. Hurray!

So here is a card for 2 challenges:

Sketch and Stash challenge #100 - Use any sketch from the last 99
Crafty Creations Challenges #105- No Flowers

I used the Sketch and Stash sketch no. 82 and the stash was the sari ribbon on the backing panel.

The main image is a stamp from a Barbara Gray Clarity stamp which has been given a simple reflection a moon and some bulrushes in the foreground. A brayer was used to colour the sky and water with Adirondack ink

To continue the watery theme, the backing panel has been made from beautiful strips of recycled saris which have been felted onto a cotton backing. The panel was then trimmed to size and mounted on card to give it some stability. A ribbon was wrapped round before the panel was bonded to the A5 white base card. The bow was made separately and bonded on once the card had been assembled.

The bottom lacy edge was cut from navy blue pearlescent card using a Spellbinders boarder.

Textures in Blue and White

A Sunday card for 2 challenges:
Crafters Companion November challenge - Favourite colours

Crafty Catz weekly challenge #157 - Texture

The stamped image, on watercolour card, is from Sheena Douglass, stamped in chipped sapphire Distress ink and a wet brush was used to draw the colour into the image.

This is mounted on navy blue pearlescent card which in turn is mounted on felt marked card which had been embossed using the Ebosser (a magic machine from Crafters Companion - saves all that turning of a handle - electricity does the work for you) and an A4 embossing folder. The white card was coloured with tumbled glass distress ink to pick out the embossed pattern.

The background is made from ribbons, wools, fibres and fabric strips which were laid onto a cotton background. Over the top of the this was place a piece of coarse netting which had some built in glitter threads and the whole lot was couched (quilted) together by running parallel lines of white stitching from top to bottom and from side to side. When cut to the required size, American seam binding was wrapped around the edge to neaten it up.

A length of the seam binding was dyed with the same two distress inks, screwed up to give creases for more texture and dried before making the bow on the Crafters Companion Ultimate Pro.

The A5 card blank, also in navy blue pearlescent was folded to size on the Ultimate Pro and then everything was bonded in place with double sided tape, foam tape and Pinflair glue gel.

From all this, you might have gussed that my favoutire colour combination is blue and white.

Sunset

Good morning.

Something a bit different today. I have started working more on textiles that I used to. You can do more with them than with paper in some ways - they don't tear for a start! (Well, not unless you want them to that is.)

Here I have worked with strips of recycled sari silk which work beautifully with the embellishing machine. I started off with a plain white cotton base sheet and just felted the strips of sari silk in place. This gives some lovely textures as the edges of the strips are frayed and the are all wrinkled. Some I flattened out to give a smoother surface and then some I have deliberately left wrinkled to give extra layers. Some of the silks have a shine to them which add an extra dimension and some even change colour slightly depending on how the light falls on them

Once the felting process was finished. I added freehand machine embroidery to add the bushes and some lines in the water. I may well add some hand embroidery too to give even more texture.

Giveaway

In a bid to start building up our business, I thought I would start a series of small giveaways of various crafting supplies. So here is your chance to win a delightful 6" x 6" pad of paper "Spring Jubilee" from "Pink Paislee" with two strips of coordinating chipboard images.

All you need to do is leave a comment below and check back on Monday 12th November when I will have drawn a random winner.

Lavender and Old Lace (Plus Ribbon for Good Measure)

Gosh, I have been busy today. Another challenge card, this time for: Crafty Catz Weekly Challenge #152-lace and -ribbons .  The image is a paint fusion "Lavender" Stamp from Sheena Douglass - stamped and painted on an "aged" background and framed with gold embossing powder. The A5 double sided base card was dry embosses the right edge trimmed to the embossed line to show the lighter inside colour of the card.
Two narrow strips of cotton lace were bonded to the card and the join covered with lavender coloured ribbon. A piece of this ribbon was also bonded down the inside edge of the card. The two fancy cut outs were made with the brand new Spellbinders die called Grate Works. These were bonded carefully in place and then the image was added on top.

The image was finished off with a lavender bow and pale blue hot glue Swarovski crystals were stuck on place on the point of the embossing on the left had side and also to the ribbon strip on the right.

Autumn Leaves

Good morning. Happy Sunday.

Here we have a card for three challenges:

Critter Challenge134-sketch
Crafty Creations Challenges-189 Autiumn Leaves
The Paper Shelter Challenge-83-anything-goes

The A5 card is a beautiful pearlescent orange with a leather like finish.

The autumn leaves and the two corner squares were made from kraft paper which had been screwed up, died with Distress Inks and sprayed with glimmer mist for a bit of bling. All were cut out with Spellbinders dies.

The sentiment, from Sheena Douglass - which says, in case you can't read it, "Autumn is a second Spring, when every leaf is a flower" - was stamped on white card with Versmark and embossed with Cosmic Shimmer Copper Bronze Lustre powder. It was then cut out with a Spellbinder die and shaded with Spiced Marmalade and Wild Honey Distress Inks.

The ribbon was died with various Distress Inks to match the Autumn theme and this was threaded around a large gold hammered card square and tied with a bow. Everything was layered up on the card either with glue or Pinflair Gel to dive some dimension. The tails of the bow were glued in place and hot glue orange Swarovski crystals were added in the corners as dictated by the sketch.

Fire Storm

An encaustic art picture worked on canvas board. This is about 12" x 10" and was worked using the hot air blowing technique.

The board was first covered with clear wax, using the iron, which helps to make the thicker coloured waxes flow better.

Yellow, orange and red waxes were dripped all over the canvas and then remelted and blown about with a hot air gun. This is a fairly substantial heat gun, the type used by DIY enthusiasts rather than the type used by crafters for melting embossing powder and drying ink & paint.

The black silhouette was created with an encaustic iron.

I think I may well frame this one up for my exhibition at Woodruffs Cafe in Stroud next month.

Stitching and Lace with some Autumnal Colours

An A5 size card for two challenges:

The Papershelter Challenge-no-82 colours of autumn

Crafty Cardmakers Challenge-75-Stitching-and-Lace

For the autumnal colours I have gone for orange, red and green.

The background is one of my indian hand made papers which I hand dyed with inks and stitched by machine.

The main image is from one of Sheena Douglass' paint fusion range - poppies. This was painted with Acrylic paint and edged with gold embossing powder before being endged with cotton lace..

The wonderful butterfly is made using a Spellbinder die and a Cuttlebug machine.

A Study in Brown and Orange

A card for two challenges:

Crafty Catz Challenge #150 Brown and Orange

Totlally Papercrafts challenge134-use-your-favourite-stamp.html

Well, as you can see there is a lot of brown and orange on this card so I think I score on that one. The base card is orange with orange and brown mats used under the image. The flourishes and double butterfly, cut using Spellbinder dies, are in brown.

The image is from my absolute favourite stamp by Sheena Douglass from her "A Little Bit Sketchy" range. The image was stamped onto watercolour card with Adirondack Espresso ink. A water brush was used to pull the ink from the image to shade the rest of the card so that there was no white card to be seen. Once the image was dry it was matted onto brown card and mounted onto the card with Pinflair glue to raise it away from the base A5 card to give dimension.

The butterfly was just attached to the card by the body so that the double set of wings were raised up.

By the Waterside

This week I purchased an A2 hotplate for using with my encaustic art. It is brilliant, keeping a nice even temperature right across the surface of the plate and it is thermostatically controlled with variable heat settings so that you can change the temperature to suit whatever you are working on.

This is my first piece using said piece of equipment. I am quite pleased with it as a first attempt.

Encaustic Art on Parchment

In my last entry I showed examples of encaustic art which had been  transferred to watercolour card. This time I have 5 examples of encaustic art designs on parchment. Whilst being similar to painting on glossy card, you get a completely different effect. It is much softer.

Wednesday 12 September 2012

Encaustic / Mixed Media Cards

Here is something a little bit different on the encaustic art front.

These have all been created by laying down the wax on glossy card, as usual. Once the picture was finished with a fairly even coating of wax, it was turned upside down onto a piece of watercolour card and heated from the back. This melted the wax again causing it to transfer to the watercolour card and whilst molten it sinks into the fibres of the card.

Pulling the glossy card away whilst it is still warm leaves some wax on the original card and some on the watercolour card. This gives a much more muted impression.

The wax then acts as a resist to any watery media added to the picture. Some of these were completed with watercolour paints and some with inks. The paint or ink will sink into the card were there is very little wax and fill in all the gaps so that on white card can be seen.

Tuesday 11 September 2012

Flower Card

Here is a card for the Sketch and Stash Challenge no 96

The main image was created using a Versamark embossing pad, clear embossing powder and a beautiful stamp by Sheena Douglass. Once the image was embossed Broken China, Faded Jeans and Chipped Sapphire Distress Inks were used to colour the background. The ink does not stick to the embossing which acts as a resist so it was wiped off.

The background and the strip of card were white card which was treated with yellow, blue and green marbling inks. These were matted onto black and white card. The same was done for the sentiment which is from another Sheena stamp.

The stash element for the challenge consists of the flowers which were a prize last year from another challenge.

Sunday 9 September 2012

Butterfly Dance

Here we have a card for three challenges:

Crafty Cardmakers challenge-74-winged-things
Totally Papercrafts challenge-133-butterflies, buttons and bows
The Stamp Man - Summer Sizzlers - use hot colours

The base, A5 size card was coloured with Mustard Seed, Spiced Marmalade and Fired Brick Distress Inks. The image layer was coloured in the same way but it was spotted with water to lift spots of colour. The American Seam Binding was coloured on both sides using the same inks again.

The flowers and butterflies were stamped with Versamark and embossed with black glint embossing powder from WOW. The stamps  (flowers and butterflies) are by Sheena Douglass from her Silhouette Wildflowers set.

Once the image was dry it was mounted onto black card with a length of the ribbon wrapped round it. The bow was made separately and bonded in place. On top of the bow is a red button with an orangey red thread bow tied on it. and very small craft buttons, which were free with a magazine, finish off the embellishment.

Friday 31 August 2012

Lupin and Holyhocks

Good afternoon,

Another card made using one of my embroidered, inked papers. I made this for a card challenge and stupidly missed the closing date....hey, ho!

The image, from a stamp by Sheena Douglass, was stamped on black card with Versamark ink and dusted with Perfect Pearls mica powder to give a lovely shiny gold image.

My hand made background was trimmed to a suitable size and mounted onto an A5 size blank card along with a black mat.

The ribbon was hand dyed to match the embroidered paper and tied in a double bow for the embellishment.

Tuesday 28 August 2012

Zesty Summer Colours Card

Here is a card for the Totally Papercrafts challenge #131 - Zesty Summer Colours

The card is A5 in size. Both background cards  started out white. The green base one was made with various colours of glimmer mist. The smaller one was made by marbling red, orange and yellow inks.

The 4 layer flower is of felt cut out with Spellbinders which were felted together in the centre before being decorated with bright orange flat back gems. The flourish foliage was also created with Spellbinders.

The lime green flower ribbon was something I have had in my stash for years.

Monday 27 August 2012

Roses and Gems and Twine (Fibres)

It is so long since I entered a card challenge, I am ashamed of myself. So here is the first of what I hope will become a regular thing again!

I have used one of my experimental backgrounds from yesterday's post as the background for this card which is for the Crafty Creations Challenge #184 - Gems and Twine (or fibres)

Well, I didn't have any twine but I have sure packed a lot of fibres into this card!

As the paper was made from 100% cotton rag waste that chalks up one type of fibre. Then the inked cotton paper has been machine embroidered so there are some more fibres and lastly we have the amazing space dyed fibre which matched the background beautifully.

The picture is of roses and rose buds painted, using the one stroke method, with acrylic paints.

Black flat back gems have been used for the studs in the corners of the picture, smaller gems for the butterfly's body and wings and finally a line of clear gems along the bottom of the card.

Sunday 26 August 2012

Experimental Embroidered Background Papers

Good morning. Happy Bank Holiday weekend for those of you living in Britain.

I have actually found some time to play and here is the outcome of my experiments.

I started off with approximately A5 size hand made paper which is made from 100% cotton rag waste. I thought this would be the best as I wanted to attack it with a sewing machine and I thought the rag fibres would hold the stitching better.

However, first I had to colour the paper. This was achieved in my own inimitable style by getting very messy with some water and inks. I admit I had to resort to rubber gloves for this one. The ink was a bit difficult to wash off skin!

Using a non-stick mat to protect everything, I sprayed the paper with a fine mist of water and then used ink from bottles that had dropper attachments to drip the ink onto the slightly soggy paper. It ran quite well by itself but I have to say that in some cases I did help the colours to mix a bit in some areas. Once satisfied with the colours I dried the paper over night. They dried quite a lot lighter than they looked yesterday.

So, this morning, I started playing with the sewing machine and these are my first results. I am pleased with the way they have worked out. See below for some close up shots.

Hopefully, by the end of the weekend, I will have some finished cards to show you so that you can see how they look when incorporated into finished product.

Fantasy Castle

This is one of my favourite pictures that I have created recently. This started out life as a piece of white canvas board, slightly bigger than A4 in size. I dripped various colours of wax all over the place, starting with white in the centre and moving through various shades of blue. This was heated with a hot air gun (the type you use for DIY rather than the craft one used for melting embossing powder) until the wax started to run. A combination of moving the heat gun and the board itself allowed the wax to be moved where I wanted it to go. Once the base pattern had been created to give a very turbulent effect, the castle was added using the edge of an encaustic iron.

Tuesday 17 July 2012

Mountainous Landscape

Good morning.A bright and cheerful landscape. This one is A4 in size and started out life as cream coloured sealed (glossy) card. It was all created with a hot iron with a stylus used to create the fine detail of the birds, dragonflies and the flower detail.

Thursday 28 June 2012

Single Poppy Card

Good morning.

Sorry, there seems to be a bit of a theme developing here but I do love poppies, they are my favourite flower.

Again this was a stamped design from Sheens Douglass over painted with one stroke painting techniques. The white card was innked with 3 different colours of green distress ink which was sprinkled with water and some of the ink lifted off to give a speckled effect.

The image was matted and layered onto an A5 white base card. The largest mat was white card sprayed with mica sprays to give a nice bit of shimmer.

For the embellishment I use a piece of flower shaped ribbon with flat backed crystals and pearls for the flower centres. It is quite a simple card but I think it looks quite striking.

Wednesday 27 June 2012

Two Poppies

Good morning.

Here is a new card with my favourite poppies. The centre piece is the one stroke technique poppies based around stamped images from Sheena Douglass. They were painted with acrylic paints.

The background card was made by spraying white card with various tones of mica sprays. Once this was dry it was stamped with leaves from another Sheena stamp.

The base card is A5 in size and the same colour green card was used to make the layers along with one mat of satin copper card. Copper was used to compliment the copper embossing powder used around the edge of the image.

As a finshing touch vintage style lace was mounted with double sided tape and topped off with satin ribbon and a bow.
